A driver became ill after encountering a light shaped like a “massive star”, government UFO files released reveal.
In his account to police he described how a “tube of light” surrounded his car in Ebbw Vale, Blaenau Gwent, and later how he was sick.
The National Archives release is part of a three-year project by the MoD and the National Archives to release files related to UFOs on the National Archives website.
The incident on 27 January, 1997 is detailed in Ministry of Defence papers.
Such an episode is classed by ufologists as a “close encounter of the second kind” – UFO sighting followed by an associated physical effect.
It was one of many reports alongside countless “light in the sky” sightings, episodes in which eyewitnesses claim some form of physical effect and even contact with an alien being, in the National Archive files made public for the first time.
The man in Ebbw Vale said he was driving on a clear and dry night around 2240 GMT when he encountered the UFO.
His identity has been withheld, but his report to police shows he was from Newport.
He claimed his car was surrounded for five minutes by a “tube of light” which swept towards him from the north east.
During this time both his radio and mobile phone stopped working.
The report said: “He felt and was indeed sick later on. He is still feeling ill today (28/1/97) and has developed a skin condition. Advised to see doctor.”
The report goes on to describe the encounter: “First sighting seemed like a “massive star” moving towards the car.
“Having stopped the car and switched the lights off, the light encircled the car, remaining for perhaps five minutes.
“[The man] was able to walk through the light which was very bright. There was no sound, no aircraft or helicopter noise, and besides feeling ill was very frightened.”
The report said the man’s car was left covered in “dust and dirt”.

LONDON — The men were air traffic controllers. Experienced, calm professionals. Nobody was drinking. But they were so worried about losing their jobs that they demanded their names be kept off the official report.
No one, they knew, would believe their claim an unidentified flying object landed at the airport they were overseeing in the east of England, touched down briefly, then took off again at tremendous speed. Yet that’s what they reported happened at 4 p.m. on April 19, 1984.
The incident is one of hundreds of reported sightings contained in more than 1,000 pages of formerly secret UFO documents being released Wednesday by Britain’s National Archives. It is one of the few that was never explained.

Vacationers spilled out of motor homes and drivers stopped in their tracks as a mysterious cylinder hovered over a campsite in Somerset, southwestern England.
The gleaming grey object can be clearly seen against the cloudless blue sky.
It has no visible sign of power — yet does not appear to be falling to earth.
Local police reported no unusual activity but witnesses were left convinced they had seen an extraterrestrial spectacle.
The unearthly incident happened around 1 p.m. on a sunny day last July, when tourists at a holiday park at Brean, near Burnham-on-Sea, spotted the object.

It just doesn’t get much better than this. Clear, sunny day, no clouds in sight. Plus a few people had their video cameras with them to take some footage.
That was the interesting part about this article to me. It’s such a nice cloudless day. We could use more videos like that! Another paragraph was “It has no visible sign of power — yet does not appear to be falling to earth.” This is quite a unique report to me because of those two facts: the way it’s not falling to earth but doesn’t seem to have power plus the perfect, cloudless day. Normally you get a fuzzy video and a little blur in the sky. That doesn’t really tell you much, does it? Though I admit the video quality isn’t amazing, but it’s good for how far away the camera man was.

Four calves were found dead in a pasture just north of the New Mexico state line in recent weeks. The dead calves had their skins peeled back and organs cleared from the rib cage. One calf had its tongue removed.
But rancher Manuel Sanchez has found no signs of human attackers, such as footprints or ATV tracks. And there are no signs of an animal attack by a coyote or mountain lion. Usually predators leave pools of blood or drag marks from carrying away the livestock.
Two officers from the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office have investigated the mutilations but say they don’t know what’s killing the calves.
“There’s nothing really to go by,” said Sanchez, who’s ranched for nearly 50 years. “I can’t figure it out.”
A spokesman for the sheriff’s office told The Pueblo Chieftain that investigators doubt a person butchered the calves because there is no blood at the scene.
“I’ve butchered a cow before and I know what kind of a mess it leaves,” Sgt. James Chavez said.
